Today is National Watermelon Day and since watermelon is good for diabetic dogs to eat/or drink, why not give them some watermelon chunks to enjoy on the back porch. You can even partially freeze them for a hot day’s treat.
Some people are confused about giving watermelon to a diabetic dog (or even for people at that matter) but it is confusing.
Watermelon has a high glycemic index which usually means it can cause a dramatic rise in blood sugar after eating it. However, watermelon actually has a “low glycemic load” and that is good for a diabetic dog. For example, 3/4 of a cup of watermelon has less than 9 grams of carbohydrates.
So go ahead and let them enjoy some watermelon but remember that moderation is the key with a diabetic.
