Let’s Not Jump About the FDA Investigation on Legumes and Potatoes

FDA Logo         The FDA released yesterday afternoon to alert pet owners and veterinary professionals about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients.  Since DCM most often happens in large breed dogs, we should not jump into action and stop feeding our dogs grain-free food because of this FDA investigation without a conclusion or consulting your holistic DVM.

If you read the complete bulletin that was released, canine diets in cases reported to the FDA “frequently list potatoes or multiple legumes such as peas, lentils, other “pulses” (seeds of legumes), and their protein, starch and fiber derivatives early in the ingredient list, indicating that they are main ingredients”.  I do not agree with these being the main ingredients for dogs and since it could be a taurine deficiency, as dogs should be fed strong levels of beef, lamb, dark chicken meat, eggs, seaweed, krill and brewer’s yeast. In addition, raw meat is fairly known for its richness in taurine.

If you are a client of a holistic DVM, I would consult with them first before a decision is made on changing your form of food; whether that is commercial, raw or cooked homemade food.

Dog in Mourning: Helping Our Pets Cope with Loss on Cesar’s Way

A heart-tugging image of a brown Labrador retriever named Hawkeye lying beside the American flag-draped casket of his human companion, Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson, went viral on the internet within hours. Pet lovers were moved by the symbol of loyalty shown by the dog who would not leave his best friend’s side. For many Americans, the image also served as a reminder of the lives that were lost on 9/11 and of those who are still serving in Afghanistan. For others, the depiction of a seemingly depressed and heart-broken dog represented the possibility that there’s more to our pets’ psychology than has ever been identified.

If dogs are capable of grieving, then how can we, as pet lovers, help them deal with their pain? How can we heal them after the loss a loved one?
