Let’s Not Jump About the FDA Investigation on Legumes and Potatoes

FDA Logo         The FDA released yesterday afternoon to alert pet owners and veterinary professionals about reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients.  Since DCM most often happens in large breed dogs, we should not jump into action and stop feeding our dogs grain-free food because of this FDA investigation without a conclusion or consulting your holistic DVM.

If you read the complete bulletin that was released, canine diets in cases reported to the FDA “frequently list potatoes or multiple legumes such as peas, lentils, other “pulses” (seeds of legumes), and their protein, starch and fiber derivatives early in the ingredient list, indicating that they are main ingredients”.  I do not agree with these being the main ingredients for dogs and since it could be a taurine deficiency, as dogs should be fed strong levels of beef, lamb, dark chicken meat, eggs, seaweed, krill and brewer’s yeast. In addition, raw meat is fairly known for its richness in taurine.

If you are a client of a holistic DVM, I would consult with them first before a decision is made on changing your form of food; whether that is commercial, raw or cooked homemade food.
